How Do Underground Dog Fences Work?

As your pet comes near the boundary area, the special collar it is wearing will produce a warning tone. If the dog does not move away from the area shortly, the sound will be followed by a mild electrical shock, transmitted through a device connected to the collar. The shock is basically harmless and doesn't cause pain to the dog, but rather a slight discomfort. However, if this does not have an effect, the setting may be tweaked so that the strength of the shock is enough for the dog not to cross the barrier. Some newer collars emit a spray instead of a shock.

Advantages Of Invisible Dog Fences

Using underground fencing means you don't have to resort to overly restrictive methods of containing your dog. Cages and pens can prevent your dog from exercising or other necessary activities. Chains and leashes can get wound around things or injure your dog if used improperly.

These fences are less expensive than traditional fences. They can also be used indoors to keep your dog out of certain areas.

Disadvantages Of Invisible Dog Fences

Unlike other fences, Underground Dog Fences only keep your dog in. They don't keep anything else out.

If your dog is overstimulated, or decides to chase a squirrel for example, they may ignore the shock and run right through the barrier. But then they may be afraid to cross back into their own yard.
